Man taken into custody after standoff with police

STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. – Local 4 cameras captured video of a man crawling out of an overturned car Monday night after a standoff with police on the side of the road.

Police said the man barricaded himself inside the smashed car after leading them on a high-speed police chase and crashing on westbound Metro Parkway near Schoenherr Road in Sterling Heights

Officers said the man threatened them with a gun and wouldn't come out of his car until around 11:45 p.m., when he squeezed out of the broken windshield and surrendered.

Video shows the man throwing something out of the car and forcing his way through the windshield. When he got onto the ground, he put both hands and feet in the air before crawling away from the car and being taken into custody.

Troopers said the chase started as a traffic stop near M-59 and Romeo Plank Road, but the driver didn't pull over. He led troopers on a chase from M-59 to I-94 to Metro Parkway, where he hit a spike strip, which caused the car to roll over.
