Uber driver killed in Detroit: Trial starts today

Dajuan Watson

DETROIT – A trial will get started Thursday for a man charged in the deadly shooting of an Uber driver in Detroit.

Update: Man found guilty of murder in Detroit Uber driver's shooting

Dajuan Watson, 24, is accused of shooting and killing 51-year-old Modou Diagne when they got into an argument on March 19, 2016.

Diagne was found inside an SUV in the 5500 block of Pacific on Detroit's west side. He suffered at least two gunshot wounds, police said.

Prosecutors say Watson had requested the Uber driver pick him up and then shot him during an altercation. Diagne died at a hospital.

Uber drivers carry no cash, but his phone was stolen.

Diagne came from his native Senegal to Detroit and had been driving for Uber for the past three years to support his wife and children.

"He was working all the time, no days off. Sometimes 19 hours a day," said niece Fatima Diop.

Watson is charged with felony murder, armed robbery, intent to deliver heroin, and felony firearms. Opening statements are scheduled to start about 9 a.m. Thursday.
