It's Day 8 at the Rio Olympics. Here's a look at what's on today and how our Michigan Olympians are faring. First, here's what Simone Manuel's gold medal means to some aspiring Olympians in Detroit: 

Today's Highlights 

NBC Daytime

Live coverage includes heats in the men’s 100m featuring defending champ Usain Bolt and USA’s Justin Gatlin, plus American Allyson Felix the reigning champion, in round one of the women’s 400m.

The men’s discus final is also decided.

The US targets a third-consecutive gold in the women’s eight. Katelin Snyder  is on this team. She is from Detroit and her whole family is gathering for a watch party in Plymouth. Her race goes at 10 a.m.

The US men’s volleyball team meets France in a Pool A match. The US tied for fourth in Pool A with three points. 

NBC Primetime

Michael Phelps swims in his (allegedly) final Olympic race as he swims the butterfly leg for Team USA in the men’s 4x100m medley relay.
U of M’s Connor Jaeger swims the1500m freestyle. Jaeger finished second in the prelims. Other races include the women’s 4x100m medley relay and the women’s 50m freestyle.

Live coverage includes American Tori Bowie in the women’s 100m plus training partners Mo Farah of Great Britain (2012 Gold) and Galen Rupp of the US (2012 Silver) in their rematch of the men’s 10,000m.

The heptathlon also continues.

Canton's Allison Schmitt finds honor competing in Rio

Mikaela Mayer, a Northern Michigan alum, won her opening round boxing match. She's into the quarterfinals on Monday. 

Andrew Evans, of Portage, finished 16th in the discus prelims.
