YPSILANTI TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Police believe alcohol or drugs played a role in an early Sunday crash on I-94 that critically injured a 30-year-old man from Ypsilanti.
It happened at about 5 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 3, on the exit ramp from westbound I-94 to Wiard Road in Ypsilanti Township.

According to authorities, the victim reached out to his brother and asked him to bring a gas can for his truck, which was parked on the shoulder of the ramp. When the brother arrived, he reportedly found the victim collapsed in the road, his truck hit by a vehicle and another pickup truck driving into the woods.
Police believe the victim was standing outside his vehicle when a 50-year-old man from Ypsilanti fell asleep while driving, crashing into the victim’s truck and the victim before driving into the woods.
The 30-year-old man was transported to Trinity Health Hospital in Ann Arbor, where he remains in critical condition with severe injuries.
The 50-year-old man was taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
The investigation is ongoing, but police believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the crash.
