From Final Four to NBA: Michigan basketball honors Trey Burke with No. 3 jersey raised to rafters

A Columbus, Ohio, native, Burke played two seasons at Michigan from 2011 to 2013

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The University of Michigan will honor former consensus National Player of the Year Trey Burke by raising his No. 3 jersey to the Crisler Center rafters.

The ceremony will take place at halftime of the No. 3-ranked Michigan Wolverines’ home game vs. Ohio State on Friday, Jan. 23.

Tip-off is slated for 8 p.m.

Burke will become the sixth Wolverine to have his jersey honored inside Crisler Arena, joining legends Cazzie Russell, Rudy Tomjanovich, Phil Hubbard, Glen Rice, and Bill Buntin.

Of those, only Russell’s No. 33 is officially retired by the program.

A Columbus, Ohio, native, Burke played two seasons at Michigan from 2011 to 2013.

Burke started all 73 games in his career, averaging 16.9 points, 5.7 assists, and 3.3 rebounds per game.

He led Michigan to back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances, including the 2013 national championship game.

Burke earned Big Ten Freshman of the Year honors after averaging 14.8 points and setting the Michigan freshman assist record.

His sophomore season was historic, averaging 18.6 points and 6.7 assists, setting the single-season assist record with 260, and helping Michigan reach its first Final Four in 20 years.

He swept the nation’s top individual awards after that season, including the Wooden Award, Naismith Trophy, Oscar Robertson Trophy, Bob Cousy Award, and AP, NABC, and USBWA National Player of the Year honors.

Burke was the first Wolverine to be recognized as the consensus National Player of the Year and was a consensus first-team All-American before entering the 2013 NBA Draft.

Selected ninth overall by the Minnesota Timberwolves and traded to the Utah Jazz on draft night, Burke played 10 NBA seasons with the Jazz, Washington Wizards, New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks, and Philadelphia 76ers.

As a rookie, he averaged 12.8 points and 5.7 assists, earning NBA All-Rookie First Team honors.

Burke appeared in over 500 NBA games, averaging 10.6 points and 3.3 assists.

Known for scoring in bursts, he had 28 career 20-point games and scored 40 points against the Houston Rockets in 2018.

Burke also represented the United States internationally and continued his professional career overseas, signing with Italy’s Pallacanestro Reggiana in 2023 and moving to Turkey’s Bursaspor in 2024.

To celebrate the jersey raising, the first 5,000 fans attending the game will receive a replica No. 3 jersey banner.
