ANN ARBOR, MI -- The University of Michigan wheelchair basketball team played at Crisler Center for the second time in program history on Thursday, Jan. 19. Leading 27-18 at halftime, the Maize team was dominant. In the second half, the Blue team nearly pulled ahead but the Maize team was quick to recover, winning 49-38. Although spectators were not permitted at the event, Michigan’s wheelchair basketball team players said they hope to one day play for a full house at Crisler. While Michigan and Central Michigan have a lot of shared history, the Wolverines have never played Lipscomb. The Bisons went 14-19 last season (6-10 in the ASUN) in Lennie Acuff’s third season as head coach. Michigan will pay Central Michigan $90,000 to make the trip from Mount Pleasant.

The new $41 million project to replace the scoreboards at Michigan Stadium is a go. Rob Rademacher, executive senior associate athletic director and chief operating officer, provided the public a line-item look at the costs. While the two video boards themselves are only expected to cost $12 million, Michigan plans to spend an additional $12 million on infrastructure, site work and design to help get them up. In addition, the project calls for an $8 million upgrade to the production studios at Crisler Center, which serves multiple athletic facilities across campus, including Michigan Stadium, Yost Ice Arena, field hockey, baseball, softball and indoor track. The school last replaced the scoreboards inside Michigan Stadium in 2011, and haven’t upgraded the production equipment inside Crisler since 2013.

With American, the Patriot League champion, ranking third in the country in 3-point defense, Michigan exploited its size advantage inside. Defensively, Michigan forced 21 turnovers and held American to 29.8% shooting, including just 1 of 21 from beyond the arc.

In-person graduation ceremonies planned at University of Michigan-Dearborn
DEARBORN, MI — Four days of in-person commencement ceremonies for the class of 2021 are being planned for May 1-4 at the University of Michigan Dearborn, officials said. While UM-Dearborn typically has graduation at the Crisler Center in Ann Arbor, COVID-19 restrictions make that event impossible this year, officials said. Graduates are limited to two guests, and ceremonies will be grouped by college. Students from both classes are asked to RSVP by March 12 to help the university prepare for the ceremonies. UM-Ann Arbor senior Tal Lipkin started a petition for an in-person commencement ceremony and, while the ceremony is still going to be virtual, officials have announced students will have the opportunity for some in-person graduation experiences, including professional photos at Michigan Stadium in their graduation attire.

Michigan and Penn State were supposed to meet in Happy Valley on Jan. 9, but the game was postponed due to positive COVID-19 tests within the Nittany Lions’ program. Instead, they will play at Penn State on Wednesday night and then host Indiana the following Saturday (Jan. 30) in Ann Arbor. In their first meeting this season, Michigan survived a scare from Penn State, winning 62-58 after trailing in the final minutes at the Crisler Center.

University of Michigan will no longer host 2020 presidential debate due to public health concerns
ANN ARBOR, Mich. The University of Michigan will no longer host one of the three presidential debates planned for this fall ahead of the 2020 General Election. The Commission on Presidential Debates announced June 23 that the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts of Miami-Dade County in Miami, Florida will host the Oct. 15 debate that had been planned for Crisler Center on U-Ms athletics campus. The CPD said in a release that the University has concluded that it is not feasible to host the presidential debate as planned.It is with great disappointment that I must ask for the University of Michigan to be released from its agreement with the Commission on Presidential Debates to host the Presidential Debate on Oct. 15, 2020, said U-M President Mark Schlissel. The other presidential debates will take place Sept 29 at the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Indiana, and Oct. 22 at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee. The University of Utah in Salt Lake City will host a vice presidential debate Oct. 7.
