University of Michigan sued by student accused of using AI to write papers

The student says anxiety and OCD were behind their writing style

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – A University of Michigan student is suing the university after being accused of using artificial intelligence to write her papers.

The student identified only as Jane Doe says her tone and writing style come from anxiety and OCD, not A.I.

In the lawsuit, she claims she provided medical documentation to the university, but a graduate instructor in her “Great Books” course still accused her of cheating.

She received a “No record” grade on her transcript for the class.

The student is appealing misconduct charges against her and also filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Civil Rights.
