PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Residents got a rude awakening on Wednesday as they woke up and saw a massive freight train having jumped the tracks and spilled its load all over the area.
It was a startling sight to anyone who lives along State and Payeur Roads in Pittsfield Township.
Around 3:30 a.m., 13 cars from an Ann Arbor rail freight train jumped the rails, which sent it flying off the tracks, into the nearby woods, and up and down the roads.
It left behind a scary scene with rail cars, axles, and parts of the train tracks having been ripped from the ground and scattered all over the woods.
The locomotive engine was still running and sparking as it hung off the broken track on Wednesday afternoon.
The train was hauling a shipment of grain and corn, which was spilled all over the properties around the track.
Ann Arbor Rail, which owns the particular train that went over those tracks, says that they’re investigating the incident and trying to figure out exactly what led to the derailment.
The Pittsfield Township Police say that there were no injuries and there are no hazmat issues following the derailment.
