Train derails in Washtenaw County, closing roads as crews work to clear tracks

No hazardous materials or injuries reported, officials confirm

PITTSFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – A few roads in Pittsfield Township will be closed for several days after a train derailed.

At least 13 train cars went off the track early Wednesday, Feb. 18, near Payeur Road, just east of State Street in Pittsfield Township.

The derailment left rail cars, axles, and parts of the train tracks scattered throughout the woods. The locomotive engine was still running and sparking as it hung off the broken track.

Officials confirmed none of the train cars were carrying hazardous materials, and no injuries were reported.

Payeur Road is closed between State Street and Marton Road. Morgan Road is closed between Venture Drive and Stone School Road.

These closures are expected to last several days as crews work to clear the area.

While the exact cause of the derailment remains under investigation, officials confirmed the train was hauling a grain shipment that was now scattered and would not reach its destination.
