Nutramigen powdered baby formula recalled due to possible bacterial contamination

Hypoallergenic powder formula may pose health risk

Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition on Dec. 30, 2023, recalled its Nutramigen hypoallergenic powder baby formula due to a potential bacteria contamination. (FDA)

Nutramigen hypoallergenic powdered baby formula is being recalled due to a potential bacterial contamination that could cause adverse health effects.

Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition is recalling the powdered infant formula sold in 12.6 and 19.8 oz cans due to a possible contamination of Cronobacter sakazakii -- a bacteria that can live in dry foods. Experts say Cronobacter infections in infants are rare, but they can be deadly.

Officials say there haven’t been any illnesses reported in connection with the recalled Nutramigen formula so far. However, the possible contamination was noted in the product sampled outside the U.S., the FDA said, prompting the recall in the U.S.

  • ZL3FHG -- 12.6 oz cans
  • ZL3FMH -- 12.6 oz cans
  • ZL3FPE -- 12.6 oz cans

Anyone who purchased the recalled product is urged not to use it and to either dispose of it, or return it for a full refund. The company’s customer service can be contacted by phone at 866-534-9986, or by email at consumer.relations@rb.com.

Symptoms to watch out for

Infections caused by Cronobacter can be life threatening.

Parents and caregivers should be aware of the following symptoms, as written in the recall announcement:

“Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections (sepsis) or meningitis (an inflammation of the membranes that protect the brain and spine). Symptoms of sepsis and meningitis may include poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice (yellow skin and whites of the eyes), grunting breaths and abnormal movements. Cronobacter infection may also cause bowel damage and may spread through the blood to other parts of the body.”
