Five years after switching to country music, Windsor’s 89X is back with its alternative rock format.

“Windsor’s Alternative is back. Did you miss us? Because we missed YOU,” a social media post from the station on Thursday read.

The station kicked off the comeback announcement Thursday morning with an intro about the history of the station and then played “Stop” by Jane’s Addiction, which was the first song 89X played when it first launched in May 1991.

This comes after the radio station said in November 2020 that it would launch a new format, and a day later, it announced its switch to “Pure Country 89.”

“This is 88.7 CIMX Windsor, or, as it’s about to be known, ‘Pure Country 89,’” the station announced at the time.

Dedicated listeners were warned that they probably wouldn’t like the country format.

“Thirty years is a long time, though, and it’s time for a change,” the announcement at the time said. “Soon there will be a very new and VERY different sound on 88.7FM and to be honest if you’re a New Rock fan you’re probably not going to like it.”

After making the switch Thursday morning, many fans took to Facebook to welcome the alternative rock station back.
