Blood flow restriction is a game changer in sports performance and recovery

Blood Flow Restriction (BFR) training has emerged as a game changer to increase muscle size, strength, endurance, as well as improve athletic performance.

BFR, is a safe exercise technique that manipulates the bodies circulatory system, and when combined with exercise, produces rapid gains in strength and fitness using light-weights, and in a very short period of time.

“With BFR, simple light-weight exercise produces profound muscle burn which is comparable to intense training. This strong fatigue triggers a natural hormone response in your body the same as heavy lifting. The end result is big strength gains in less time and less stress on the body” said Laura Ramus, physical therapist and athletic trainer at DMC Rehabilitation Institute of Michigan.

“Not only do we use BFR for improving athletic performance, we also use it in rehabilitation. There are a wide variety of patients that can benefit from BFR. In the sports medicine world BFR is helping heal muscle strains, ligament sprains and getting athletes back faster after knee and shoulder surgeries. BFR is not just for athletes. BFR is now being used post operatively after total joint replacements. Performing your physical therapy program with BFR bands on, places less stress on your replacement and strength is gained much more quickly than without the bands,” said Ramus.
