Here’s our weekly round-up of what illnesses are spreading the most in Metro Detroit communities, according to our local doctors and hospitals.
WAYNE COUNTY – Summer allergies, eczema, pink eye, summer injuries, and respiratory viruses.
Dr. Ayed Mahmoud -- Trinity Health Livonia Emergency Medicine Physician
“The Emergency Department at Trinity Health Livonia continues to see a steady number of summer-related injuries, particularly from car accidents and falls. With the recent shift toward stormy weather, we urge residents to drive cautiously and stay alert on the roads. We’re also seeing a rise in allergy-related complaints, especially among children and adults spending time outdoors. Our team is also managing a consistent flow of respiratory illnesses, reminding us that summer doesn’t mean a break from viruses. Stay safe, take precautions, and don’t hesitate to seek care when needed.”
Dr. Tiffney Widner -- Pediatrician, Children’s Hospital of Michigan
“Lots of allergies, asthma, eczema, and allergic rhinitis. I’ve also seen conjunctivitis.”
OAKLAND COUNTY— Heat-related illnesses, hand, foot & mouth disease, asthma & COPD flare-ups, respiratory viruses, and pneumonia
Dr. Adam Vieder -- Director of Quality, Emergency Center, Corewell Health, Farmington Hills Hospital
“Allergy symptoms, which can often mimic infectious symptoms, are still ever present even with the pollen starting to taper. Symptomatic management with over-the-counter medications can be a big benefit for a speedier recovery whether allergic or viral in nature. Heat related issues are always something to be on the lookout for as we get into the heart of the summer. Increased hydration, seeking shade whenever able, and limiting the amount of continuous time spent in the sun are easy ways to combat dehydration and other more serious heat related illnesses during the summer months.”
Dr. Steve McGraw -- Emergency Department, Henry Ford Providence Southfield Hospital
“We’re seeing lots of respiratory infections, mostly viral in nature and some pneumonia. COPD and asthma exacerbations are also occurring due to the heat and humidity. We continue to treat common summertime injuries. When temperatures are really high, it’s always a good idea to check on elderly family members and neighbors, especially those with lung and cardiac disease.”
Dr. Trevor Eckenswiller -- Emergency Physician, Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital
“We’ve seen a notable rise in visits related to heat-related illnesses, particularly among older adults and individuals working outdoors. There has also been an increase in pediatric cases of hand, foot, and mouth disease—a viral infection that commonly causes fever and rash. As is typical for this time of year, alcohol-related visits and accidents have also gone up.”
Dr. Rena Daiza -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center Bloomfield Twp.
“Over the past week, we’ve seen an uptick in patients dealing with allergy flare-ups and respiratory issues likely related to poor air quality. Stay indoors when possible and consider using air purifiers or wearing a mask outdoors if you’re sensitive.”
Dr. Evelyn Laskowski -- Division Chief, Corewell Health Children’s in Royal Oak
“We’ve been seeing some asthma as well as some pneumonia lately. Thankfully, not a ton of either. We’ve also been seeing a few cases of Lyme Disease acquired locally. It used to be further West, but Lyme is in metro Detroit now.”
WASHTENAW COUNTY – Respiratory illnesses, croup, asthma flare-ups, COVID, hand, foot & mouth disease, outdoor injuries, stomach viruses
Dr. Brad Uren -- Clinical Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine, Michigan Medicine
“We are seeing a few upper respiratory infections including rhino enterovirus, which is also causing some GI illness. There are also a few cases of GI illness without a clear identifying cause.”
Dr. Stuart Bradin -- Clinical Professor of Emergency Medicine and Pediatrics, Michigan Medicine
“We are still seeing respiratory illnesses - especially human rhinoenterovirus, croup, asthma, COVID, and some hand-foot mouth disease. There are a lot of orthopedic injuries.”
MONROE COUNTY – Summer allergies, upper respiratory infections
Dr. Laura Grima -- ProMedica Monroe Regional Hospital Family Medicine Residency
“No concerning health trends at this time. Seasonal allergies continue to affect patients with many experiencing allergic rhinitis. Mild viral upper respiratory infections (URIs) have also been seen across all age groups.”
MACOMB COUNTY – Pneumonia, colds, asthma flare-ups, outdoor injuries, summer allergies, COVID
Dr. Stephanie Hernandez -- Emergency Physician at McLaren Macomb
“There were some, though very few, confirmed cases of COVID-19, with patients reporting symptoms of a sharp sore throat and congestion. Airbourne allergens continue to cause complications for patients with asthma, causing breathing complications in the most severe cases. Orthopedic and soft tissue injuries continue to be the most common reason patients are seeking care in the trauma center. A significant number of these injuries were sustained in car and motorcycle accidents.”
Dr. Maria Samuel -- Primary Care Physician, Henry Ford Medical Center, Sterling Heights
“Pneumonia, viral colds, coughs, asthma exacerbation, and injuries related to outdoor activities have been popping up. “
