Cleveland Clinic doctor explains why viruses spread more easily in cold winter air

Using a humidifier can help keep mucous membranes hydrated and reduce the risk of illness

Most people are tired of cold winter weather by now. But can the cold itself actually make you sick?

Experts say the answer is not direct; however, a connection helps explain why illness rates rise in winter.

You can’t catch a cold just from cold weather itself, but cold environments can indirectly increase your chances of getting sick.

Dr. Neha Vyas of the Cleveland Clinic said that viruses are usually to blame for most winter illnesses.

When temperatures drop, the nose and throat can dry out, making it easier for viruses to enter the body.

Viruses like the flu also spread more easily in cold, dry conditions.

Using a humidifier can help keep mucous membranes hydrated and reduce the risk of illness.

Just be sure to clean the humidifier frequently.

Another reason more people get sick in winter is that we spend more time indoors in close contact with others.

Taking extra precautions can help.

Wash your hands frequently, cover your cough or sneeze, and stay home if you’re sick, said Vyas.

Vyas also said that eating healthy foods, staying hydrated, and getting vaccines like the flu shot also go a long way toward keeping you healthy during winter.
