New documentary shares the story of a famous Detroit songwriter

Film is about the late Allee Willis

She wrote the musical “The Color Purple”, the theme song to “Friends”, Earth, Wind & Fire’s hit song “September”, and now a new documentary is telling the story of the late songwriter and Detroiter Allee Willis.

“The World According to Allee Willis” is making its Detroit premiere this week during the Freep Film Festival. The documentary will play Thursday, April 11th at 6 p.m. at the Michigan Science Center and Saturday, April 13th at 5 p.m. at the Birmingham 8 Cinema.

Film director Alexis Spraic described Allee Willis as “iconic and a “larger than life figure”. She said that Willis really wanted to represent a beacon of individuality and self-acceptance.
