ROYAL OAK, Mich. – A young giraffe has died at the Detroit Zoo after he was seriously injured during an interaction with herd members on Saturday.
The zoo said Nguvu was seriously injured on Aug. 1 during an interaction between herd members in the giraffes’ outdoor habitat.
Zoo members and the veterinary team monitored his condition. His condition worsened, and the zoo said, “When it became clear his injuries were too severe to overcome, our veterinary and life sciences teams made the compassionate but heartbreaking decision to humanely euthanize him.”
“Even though Nguvu was with us for only a short time, he was deeply loved by the people who cared for him every day. This loss has been especially difficult for our animal care and veterinary teams, who gave him extraordinary care from the moment he was injured until the very end. Our team continues to closely monitor and care for the rest of the herd.

This is the second time a young giraffe has died at the Detroit Zoo this year. In February, Okidi, who was born in November 2025, ran into a habitat viewing panel in her indoor habitat. She was seriously injured, leading to her being euthanized.
