Two Rhythms, One Stage: Tap Dance Premieres at Michigan Jazz Festival

A preview of upcoming event

This year marks the 30th annual Michigan Jazz Festival and every year it continues to evolve. This year, a new form of art is introduced: tap dancing.

Pianist Michael Jellick and tap dancer Claudia Rahardjanoto joined Music Monday on “Live in the D” for a preview performance.

“I performed two years ago at the Michigan Jazz Fest as a soloist and actually had Claudia step in for a song, and this is the first time we’re going to bring tap as a whole set to the Michigan Jazz Festival,” Michael said.

Claudia, who has performed all over the world, shared that this is a surreal experience to perform here in Detroit.

“It’s really special to bring tap dance everywhere around the world, but specifically bringing it to Michigan and the Metro-Detroit area is very near and dear to my heart,” Claudia said.

The Michigan Jazz Festival takes place on Sunday, July 20th at Schoolcraft College in Livonia.
