Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion has a new slice of flavor. Toss & Sauce Pizzeria, a minority- and women-owned spot co-owned by Ashley Guynes and Cher Slater, is bringing a BYOP - build-your-own pizza - approach and a menu anchored in organic ingredients to Livernois.
The shop leans into family and neighborhood roots with signature pies that tell stories. There’s “The Mo,” named for Guynes’ grandmother, topped with ground beef, bell peppers and red onions on a red sauce base. A veggie pie, “Mel Street,” honors a late family member.
“We’re literally BYOP - build your own pizza,” Guynes said during an appearance on “Live In The D.” “We stand on our creative, organic flavor - everything is made from organic ingredients, with no artificial sweeteners or sugars.”
The path to opening wasn’t overnight. Toss & Sauce began in 2018 and earned a Motor City Match award to help get off the ground. The team is in a soft-launch phase now, with a grand opening set for Oct. 15. They’re also planning a youth entrepreneurship program to seed scholarship funds.
Working as family is part of the recipe. “It’s amazing,” Slater said. “I just learned the other day how she used to watch, and she just wanted to be an entrepreneur, and that’s what she did.”
Toss & Sauce Pizzeria is located at 18673 Livernois, in Detroit’s Avenue of Fashion.
