Brown is the new black

Dark, soft, and unexpectedly chic - brown is the color of the season

Brown is having a moment - from makeup bags to closets - and Local 4 Lifestyle Editor Jon Jordan says it’s time to embrace the shade’s surprising range.

“Chocolate brown is the lipstick shade to know this fall,” Jordan said during an appearance on “Live in the D,” noting the runway-to-real-life shift that’s pushing deeper tones into everyday wear. For anyone hesitant to go full-on cocoa, he suggested layering. “You can also put a brown gloss over a bright shade and kind of mute it,” he said.

Beyond lips, Jordan says swapping jet-black staples for dark brown can be both flattering and practical, especially in bright daylight or on mature features. “A lot of makeup pros will suggest that you go to a dark brown because it’s softer,” he said. “As we mature, sometimes black can be harsh.”

On the wardrobe front, Jordan is firmly in the “brown as neutral” camp — with a twist. “I think brown is essentially neutral, but the trick is to make it an interesting neutral,” he said, advocating monochromatic looks with mixed tones and textures. “Monochromatic dressing — different shades of brown — can make what you think is not a cool color very cool.”

Pairing brown with brights is another shortcut to modern. “Hot pink looks great with brown,” Jordan said. “I love it with chartreuse, mustard, or even pastels, like coral. Pale pink can work. Baby blue is another one.”

The bottom line? Brown is versatile, current and unexpectedly chic. As Jordan put it: “Down with the brown doesn’t have to be boring.”
