Metro Detroit is getting in the holiday spirit this weekend

Here are a few festive events happening around the D

With the holiday season upon us, there is so much to do around the D! “Live in the D” reporter April Morton has the details about the events you should check out this weekend.

A family favorite is opening tonight - the Wayne County Lightfest will display 5 miles, featuring more than 100,000 lights. Guests can admire nearly 50 animated displays, all dazzling throughout Merriman Hollow Park. This event has been around for over 30 years and is always a fun time for all ages. The lights-on opening celebration will kick off tonight, November 20th, at 6pm. The Lightfest runs Wednesdays through Sundays until Christmas eve in Westland.

Royal Oak is ready to kick off the holidays. The city is gearing up to light up the park and has many activities planned. There will be a holiday market, live performances, a cookie crawl, carnival rides, food trucks, and more. The ice-skating rink will also open for the season. The festivities kick off tomorrow November 21st at 4pm. Festive celebrations will be taking place every weekend through December 21st in Downtown Royal Oak.

You can make your way over to Rochester Hills and experience a special visit from Santa. The jolly man himself will be in a cozy space surrounded by the dazzle of 800,000 lights, illuminating the festive village of Rochester Hills. Some reindeer will also be joining along the family fun activities. You can visit Santa Fridays through Sundays beginning tomorrow, November 21st, at 6pm, with running select times through December 24th.

Enjoy a festive event in an historic setting. The Grosse Pointe War Memorial is getting ready to switch on the lights for its annual tree lighting ceremony. The event is happening Sunday, November 23rd, and will feature caroling, a holiday market, and more. This event is just the start of more festive celebrations happening throughout the season, so you won’t want to miss the tree lighting this weekend from 4pm to 7pm.

Lastly, the Detroit Zoo has transformed into a magical winter wonderland. The 13th annual Wild Lights is back! The seasonal spectacular celebration features millions of LED lights along with 500 animal and nature themed displays that will dazzle and offer immersive experiences. Guests can indulge in treats, enjoy warming fires, and of course take advantage of the best selfie opportunities. The lights switch on this Saturday, November 22nd, and runs select nights through January 4th.
