It’s been a cool day across Metro Detroit, but warmer temperatures and more rain are set to return. We’ll see partly cloudy skies becoming mainly clear for the rest of this Monday (May 23). It will be a chilly night as temperatures drop into the lower 40s. Areas north of M-59 may even dip into the upper 30s. Some patchy frost can’t be ruled out in our north zone.
Bystander injured in Michigan crash caused by road rage has died, police say
GARDEN CITY, MI – A bystander injured during a road rage incident in Metro Detroit has died. According to the Garden City Police Department, the motorist involved in a crash caused by two feuding parties succumbed to injuries on May 20. “The Garden City Police Department wishes to extend our condolences to the family of the deceased,” police said in an updated news release. Witnesses told WDIV-TV in Detroit that they heard six to 10 gunshots from a nearby salon. Anyone with information is urged to contact the Garden City Police Department by calling 734-793-1717.

Driver dies after vehicle gets sideswiped, rolls over on Davison Freeway in Metro Detroit
HIGHLAND PARK, MI – A motorist died after a rollover crash in Metro Detroit. According to the Michigan State Police, the crash occurred on Davison Freeway and I-75 in Highland Park at 1:20 a.m. on Monday. A preliminary investigation revealed the driver of a vehicle was traveling eastbound on the Davison Freeway when they attempted to change from the center lane to right the right lane. As the driver was changing lanes, the vehicle sideswiped a vehicle already in the right lane. Davison Freeway was closed at the Oakland Avenue exit while troopers investigated.

GasBuddy continues to predict “a long year for motorists” after the national gas price average rose to $4.36 per gallon on Tuesday, breaking the previous all-time high of $4.35 per gallon set on March 10. “Tight gasoline stocks in the Midwest, coupled with rising demand and high crude oil prices sent Michigan gas prices soaring to a new record high,” said Adrienne Woodland, spokesperson, AAA-The Auto Club Group. “Pump prices will likely face upward pressure as oil prices remain above $105 per barrel.”Statewide, Michigan’s prices soared 28 cents. Michigan most expensive gas price averages were in Marquette ($4.39), Lansing ($4.35) and Saginaw ($4.35).

On Monday, officials in Plymouth Township (Wayne County) reminded residents that the Michigan Department of Transportation will close northbound I-275 from the evening of Friday, April 22 until 5 a.m. on Monday, April 25. The well-traveled highway serves as a western bypass to downtown Detroit and takes many people to Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport. All entrance ramps to northbound I-275, from I-94 including Ecorse Road, US-12, M-153, Ann Arbor Road, and eastbound M-14 will be closed. “The pavement on northbound I-275 is deteriorating quicker than anticipated and repairs must be done,” township officials wrote.

TROY, MI - A man accusing of chasing people with a hatchet says he went going after the wrong people. The alleged incident happened last week in the parking lot of the Lifetime Fitness at Long Lake and Crooks in Troy in Metro Detroit. Police say the alleged victims parked next to the man because they knew him from school. They tell police he blocked them in and ran around their car with the hatchet and even hit the passenger side window causing damage. Police tracked down the suspect nearby and arrested him during a traffic stop, finding the hatchet in his vehicle.

The Detroit-based Catholic High School League announced in a press release on Tuesday that it will officially add five Toledo-area programs to its league starting with the fall season of the 2023-24 school year. Toledo Central Catholic High School, Notre Dame Academy, St. Francis de Sales School, St. John’s Jesuit, and St. Ursula Academy were all accepted as members of the league. Archdiocese of Detroit Catholic Schools interim superintendent Laura Knaus and Toledo’s senior director of Catholic education Matt Daniels issued a joint statement about the CHSL expansion.
