Music Monday: Damon Terrell leans Latin on new project

Detroit guitarist blends modern jazz, urban funk and rock

Guitarist, songwriter and producer Damon Terrell is stepping into a bold new chapter with a Latin-inspired project that channels rhythm, passion and global influences while staying rooted in his modern jazz sensibilities.

“I describe it as modern jazz, more like a urban funk flavor with a hint of rock and Latin,” Terrell said during a Music Monday appearance on Live in the D. “I love to perform.”

Terrell said the new sound evolved organically. A fan of pianist Yanni, he began adapting keyboard lines to guitar. “Then it started sounding like Latin music,” he said.

He hopes the project creates “a nice vibe, a peace vibe,” inviting listeners to relax, enjoy and have fun.

Terrell will ring in the New Year at the Dirty Dog Jazz Cafe on Dec. 31. Reservations are by phone only. You’ll find more details about Damon Terrell at damonterrell.com.
