What’s the Buzz: Rethink resolutions by focusing on habits, not perfection

Motivational speaker suggests “choosing joy” and starting small

Author and motivational speaker Mimi Brown joined Live in the D’s “What’s the Buzz” segment to urge viewers to trade traditional New Year’s resolutions for habit-building and joy-focused goals.

“Everyone has that ‘New Year, new me,’ but you’re still the same person, you’re just evolving,” Brown said. “So, focus on how you up level who you are versus trying to change who you are.”

Brown, who kicked off her day with a 5 a.m. kickboxing class, said the shift from outcome to effort keeps people motivated. “Weight loss is all fine and good, but it’s about the habit building,” she said. “What habits am I putting into place to make me show up as the best version of myself?”

She recommended picking a single “word of the year” to guide decisions — her word is “magnetic” — and adding one daily joy instead of piling on self-critique. Other simple swaps: give a compliment each day, work out to feel good, and try a weekly digital detox.

For those overwhelmed by goal setting, Brown advised starting small and tracking progress. She said that focusing on routines like meal prep and consistent workouts helped her steadily improve over the past year.

“How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time,” Brown said. “We put so much pressure on ourselves, but if you build it up incrementally, the habits carry you.”
