Black-Tie Season Is Here - Here’s How to Get the Tux Right

Smart rules to help you stand out for the right reasons

Ahead of the Auto Show Charity Preview, Todd’s Menswear owner David Elkus says keep it classic—or bring moxie, not denim

With the Detroit Auto Show Charity Preview on the horizon, menswear pro David Elkus says the simplest way to nail black-tie is to treat the tux like a uniform.

“Wearing a tuxedo is very much wearing a uniform,” said Elkus, owner of Baron’s Wholesale Clothiers and Todd’s Menswear in Royal Oak, during an appearance on Live in the D. “If you’re not so fashion conscious, you’re going to want to stick with a basic tuxedo look.” That means a classic coat and pant, formal shirt with wing or laydown collar, bow tie, cummerbund set, and cuff links and studs.

For men edging toward something current, Elkus said refined accessories and a touch of personality go a long way—think a sharper cummerbund set or a brighter bow tie. But there’s one nonstarter. “We draw the line with jeans,” he said, noting the temptation to pair a statement dinner jacket with denim is a black‑tie misdemeanor.

Bolder dressers can play with distinctive lapels, luxe fabrics and patterned dinner jackets, Elkus said, so long as the look is intentional and well‑finished. “If you don’t have confidence to pull it off, stick with a classic look,” he said. “But if you have a little bit of moxie, a little bit of pizazz, go for it.”

Just be ready for the spotlight, he added: “Make sure that it’s all lined up well, that all your accessories are exactly as you want to be seen, because you will be seen.”
