As travelers look ahead to 2026, National Shop for Travel Day offered a timely playbook for stretching budgets without sacrificing experiences. The key, according to David Fishman, president of Cadillac Travel Group: plan early, stay flexible and think beyond the usual hot spots.
“Flexibility is everything,” Fishman said during an appearance on Live in the D. “Go during shoulder season, consider off-peak times, and you’ll find fantastic values.” He adds that midweek departures are often cheaper. “Fly on a Tuesday, Wednesday or Saturday. Those will be your best value days for airline travel.”
For value destinations, Fishman points to a mix of familiar and emerging picks. In Europe, Portugal and Croatia remain strong bets, while Montenegro, Slovenia and Italy’s Puglia region offer culture-rich trips without luxury-level price tags. In Asia, Vietnam and Cambodia stand out.
Closer to home, Fishman recommends Asheville, N.C., for hiking and family-friendly fun. For the Caribbean, Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic is a reliable all-inclusive value. He also suggests Canada — Toronto, Banff, Vancouver and Whistler — citing favorable exchange rates and spectacular scenery, including rail journeys.
Beyond destinations and timing, Fishman argues a seasoned travel advisor can save money and headaches. “We have access,” he said, noting Cadillac’s consortia relationships and blocked group space that can unlock extra amenities. “You need an advocate when you’re traveling — before, during and after — because you never know what’s going to happen.”
Fishman’s top mistake to avoid: waiting too long. “Plan ahead,” he said. “If you’re flexible and you go during off seasons and you plan ahead, you can find fantastic deals.” That applies to cruising, too: newer isn’t always cheaper or better. “You don’t have to go on the newest and best cruise ship,” he said. “There are ships that are updated and create amazing value — with the same experience.”
