StageFIT is bringing Broadway energy to the gym with a choreography-first fitness class that blends singing, dancing and sweat - no dance background required.
“StageFIT is a Broadway-inspired dance class,” said Nadia Chea, an instructor with the program. “Unlike my other classes where we have progressions across the floor or barre work, this is all choreography.”
Chea said the class draws a wide range of participants. “It’s one of the most diverse classes you’ll ever experience,” she said during a segment on Live in the D. “I have retired dancers - well, I guess they’re not retired anymore - collegiate level, and then there are people who have never danced before. I’m their first dance teacher.”
Beyond the show tunes and high-energy combinations, Chea said the workout sneaks up on you. “You are getting a complete body workout, both mental and physical, but it goes by quickly,” she said. “And you’re having so much fun singing show tunes.”
The response has been strong. “It’s been amazing,” Chea said. “People are always messaging me asking how to get involved. I literally have to throw them out at the end of class.”
Class warm-ups can include tongue-twister vocal drills paired with movement—think “lips, teeth, tip of the tongue” and “red leather, yellow leather” - to prep students to “sing and dance at the same time,” Chea said, adding that some phrases nod to classic musicals like Singin’ in the Rain.
