Michigan-made WeatherGard touts tougher windows, one-day installs

Company stands behind “true lifetime guarantee”

WeatherGard, a family-owned window maker nearing 40 years in business, is pitching Michigan-built products, one-day installations and expanded charitable giving as it serves homeowners across metro Detroit and Grand Rapids.

“We are a family-based business, proud to be here for almost 40 years,” said Larry Shy, WeatherGard’s general manager. “Everything is made in our factory in Farmington, Michigan, and we build a phenomenal product.”

Shy said the company manufactures what it calls the state’s only commercial-rated window frame, designed to withstand Michigan’s extreme temperature swings. “Everybody else is selling either a wood window and wood can rot, a fiberglass window and in the freezing cold it can crack, or a regular vinyl window that can warp, bend and bow,” he said, during an appearance on Live in the D. “We are the only solution to the problem when you get down to it.” He added, “We stand behind our product” with what he described as “the only true lifetime guarantee.”

To help homeowners navigate styles and colors, WeatherGard’s in-home design consultants use a visualizer tool to superimpose new windows and doors onto photos of a customer’s house. “We can show them what it looks like so they can see styles, colors, shapes, and we can hone in on what the customer’s desires are,” Shy said.

Most jobs are completed in a day without sacrificing quality, Shy said, by matching crew size to project scope. “You can have the best window in the world, which we do, but if you fail at installation, it’s all for nothing,” he said. “Our installers are held to a standard that most companies feel is unreasonable, but we have to because of our lifetime guarantee.”

On affordability, Shy said WeatherGard offers five years with no interest and works to keep payments within reach. “Money will never stop WeatherGard from putting a deal together with our customers,” he said. “We’re going to help our customers get affordable payment … so they can enjoy our windows and save on those energy bills.”

WeatherGard has also increased its community giving through WeatherGard Cares, launched in 2022. “This year we’re proud to say that we have increased it to $75,000,” Shy said, noting donations support groups such as Habitat for Humanity, Blue Star Service Dogs, Rebel Dogs and the National Kidney Foundation. “Every time a customer purchases from us, we donate $100…to the charity of their choice. We’re very proud to give back and support the local Michigan community.”
