Community to come together for Juneteenth Celebration in Sterling Heights

Event at Dodge Park takes place June 18

A Juneteenth Celebration in Sterling Heights will be filled with community, culture, and connection on June 18.

The celebration at Dodge Park is set to feature everything from live music and local black-owned vendors to family activities, food, and a celebration of freedom that brings the whole city together.

The event kicks off with the Dodge Park Farmers Market at 3 p.m. featuring black-owned vendors.

The celebration continues from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Patios ‘n’ Pints Beer Garden with welcoming remarks, a live DJ, and special performances next to the Upton House Museum.

Reggae band Lazo and Exodus will perform on the Dodge Park Amphitheatre stage at 7 p.m.

Then at 9 p.m., attendees can enjoy a movie in the park. The movie of the night will be “Goat” which is produced by NBA basketball star Steph Curry.

This marks the fifth year Sterling Heights has hosted the Juneteenth Celebration which has free admission.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. The Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863, but it wasn’t until June 19th, 1865, when soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, to announce that all enslaved people were free.
