Michigan roofer bets on community over private equity

Masters Roofing founder says local ownership is what keeps homeowners protected when storms hit

When private equity firms began buying up roofing companies across the country, Rhett Stahovec saw what happened next: phones went unanswered, warranties went unfulfilled, and homeowners were left with leaky roofs and no one to call.

So, he built something different.

Stahovec, owner of Masters Roofing, launched the company with a straightforward philosophy. “There’s only a right way and a wrong way, and we always want to pick the right way,” he said.

That standard has earned Masters Roofing a perfect 5-star rating - a result Stahovec attributes less to marketing and more to a culture where “the customer service is always our focus.”

The company has carved out a niche handling storm damage claims, a growing concern in Michigan, where severe weather regularly batters residential rooftops. Stahovec says his team’s depth of experience sets it apart. “We’ve quite literally handled thousands of insurance claims,” he said, adding that the team’s familiarity with the insurance market helps homeowners get what they deserve when disaster strikes.

But the pitch Stahovec keeps coming back to is simpler than claims expertise or star ratings. It’s about accountability - the kind that’s hard to maintain from a corporate office hundreds of miles away.

“Service to those types of businesses are not their priority,” he said of private equity-backed competitors. “That’s why we created this company, because that’s who we want to be. We’ve been in those positions and we’ve seen how it hurts people.”

For Stahovec, staying local isn’t just a business strategy - it’s personal. “We all grew up in the community, so we’re proud to be here,” he said.
