DETROIT – A 39-year-old Detroit man is facing multiple charges for allegedly shooting the mother of his children during a domestic dispute at a home on Sunday.

The defendant — identified at his arraignment on Tuesday as James Henry Few IV — is employed at the C.W. Morris - J.W. Henry Funeral Home, his family’s business in Highland Park.

According to Detroit police, the incident was spurred by an argument that broke out between Few and the woman around midnight at a home in the 18100 block of Indiana Avenue. When she tried to remove herself, a friend of Few’s reportedly blocked her in with his car to prevent her from leaving. It was at that point, police said, that Few allegedly went inside the house to get a pistol, before shooting her.

The victim was able to find help at a nearby gas station. Police did not specify where she was shot, other than to say she had non-life threatening injuries. Few, who says a knife was pulled on him and claims the shooting was in self-defense, left the scene before police arrived but was later taken into custody.

Few was arraigned on seven charges at the 36th District Court Tuesday, including assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm less than murder, assault with a dangerous weapon (felonious assault), domestic violence, and three felony firearm charges. He entered a not guilty plea on all counts.

His bond was set for $200,000 cash or surety, and he is scheduled to return to court at 8:45 a.m. July 21 for a preliminary hearing.
