The Detroit Foodie Fair and Detroit Vegan Event returns to Eastern Market’s Shed 5 on Sunday, Aug. 9, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., bringing together more than 75 vendors offering everything from chocolate-dipped strawberries and crunchy chili oil to Vietnamese cuisine and locally made hummus. Admission and parking are free.
The dual-festival format sets the event apart, according to Danielle Golinski, executive director of Mercantile Fairs, the organization behind the event.
“It’s actually two festivals in one,” Golinski said. “We have our Detroit Foodie Fair and then we have Detroit Vegan. We have probably about 25 to 30 strictly vegan vendors in one area.”
The event also earned national recognition this year, landing on USA Today’s top 10 food festivals in the country - a milestone Golinski called exciting for the Detroit food community.
Among the vendors drawing attention is Hummus Goodness, a Birmingham, Michigan-based brand founded by Hannah Awada, who will be on-site with fresh product - and a bonus for big shoppers.
“We are the only hummus brand made exclusively with olive oil, lemon juice, and fresh garlic,” Awada said. “We don’t use preservatives or citric acid or sodium benzoate. And if you come and see us at the show, if you buy a bunch of hummus, we’re going to give you a cute little tote bag.”
The Detroit Foodie Fair runs alongside Eastern Market’s regular Sunday market, giving visitors access to additional vendors across the market’s other sheds. More information is available at detroitfoodiefair.com or on Facebook and Instagram at @DetroitFoodieFair.
