Movie reviewer Greg Russell of MovieShowPlus.com joined Live in the D’s Reel Talk segment to give his take on three films available on screens this weekend. From a horror flick that will ruin your love of ice cream to a streaming mystery with serious pandemic vibes, here’s what’s worth your time.
The Ice Cream Man
Eli Roth’s latest horror film centers on an ice cream man in a small town who serves up a special brew - but only to kids. The results? “It makes the kids turn into vicious people,” Russell said. He even got a personal preview scare when an ice cream truck rolled past his house during his interview with Roth. His verdict: “Very scary, very chilling.” Russell gave it 3.5 out of 5 reels, noting that “if you like the scary stuff, you’ll get into it.”
The Last House
A family wakes up one morning to find they can’t escape their own home - and neither can their neighbors. Russell noted the film taps into something uncomfortably familiar: “This is like COVID. We can’t go outside, we can’t do anything.” It’s a survival thriller that keeps you guessing - though Russell warned “there’s certain parts where the story does get a little different, you know, near the end.” Still, he matched his Ice Cream Man score with another 3.5 reels.
One Night Only
For something lighter, Russell reviewed this romantic comedy with an unusual premise: “single people cannot get together with each other 364 days of the year.” On that one night, “everybody’s out trying to meet someone” - including two friends who end up finding each other in “just the most bizarre thing.” Predictable? A little. Russell gave it a solid 3 out of 5 reels.
