Annual Medicare notices carry key details ahead of open enrollment, agents say

Licensed agents with SANO urge beneficiaries to review coverage changes before open enrollment begins Oct. 1

As Medicare beneficiaries begin receiving their annual notice of change for the coming year, licensed agents are urging people not to overlook the document, saying it can reveal shifts in costs, coverage and provider networks that could affect them in 2027.

Kim West, a licensed Medicare agent with SANO, said the annual notice of change is one of the most valuable documents beneficiaries receive each year.

“It’s actually going to tell them what their plan is this year and what changes are coming to the plan next year,” West said during an appearance on Live in the D.

West added that beneficiaries shouldn’t assume a plan that worked well this year will automatically carry the same benefits and costs into the next.

“Because you really shouldn’t just assume that everything is going to roll over and just be the same,” she said. “It’s worth it to look at the plan, speak to us, and make sure everything is sound for 2027.”

Marlayna West, also a licensed Medicare agent with SANO, said the notice covers more than just medical care - it can also affect a beneficiary’s budget.

“The annual notice of change doesn’t just go over the changes with your care, but also your budget,” she said, noting that the document details changes to doctors, prescriptions and benefits. “It might be a great plan for you this year, but it may not be the correct place for you for the following year.”

Kevin Cox, a licensed Medicare agent with SANO, said the company takes a broader view of retirement planning that goes beyond a single year’s Medicare costs.

“We don’t just look at the year at a glance,” Cox said. “We look at, will you be able to afford this at 70, 75, 80? Because it is the insurance you’re going to carry for the long haul.”

Cox encouraged beneficiaries to reach out before open enrollment begins Oct. 1 so agents have time to review their plans, adding that SANO’s guidance comes at no cost to clients.

“We encourage you to call us today…do not wait,” he said.

Cox said the relationship with clients doesn’t end once enrollment closes.

“Welcome to the family,” he said. “You have us 365 days a year.”
