The Magic Soiree, Metro Detroit’s long-running dinner-and-magic experience at the Embassy Suites, is kicking off a new season with a lineup built for younger audiences, its performers announced this week.
Now in its eighth year, the show pairs close-up magic performed tableside with a full theater production featuring touring headliners. Magicians Dreygon and Ferran Charles, who have performed at the Soiree since it began, said the format keeps audiences coming back.
“Every single time you come to see the show, it’s a different experience,” Dreygon said.
Charles said the rotating cast of performers is what sets the Soiree apart from other magic shows.
“By the end of the evening, you’ve seen as many as 5 magicians,” Charles said.
The two credited the Soiree’s founders for the show’s staying power.
“We call the owners, Keith and Sarah, we call them our magical parents,” Dreygon said.
A show designed for families
The biggest change this season is the addition of daytime performances aimed at a broader age range than the standard evening show, which is geared toward audiences 10 and older.
“We’re actually introducing what we’re calling the family shows,” Dreygon said, adding they are designed for guests “ages 4 to 104.”
International draw
Organizers said the Soiree continues to attract performers from beyond Michigan, giving local audiences access to magicians they might not otherwise see.
“We even get people from all over the world who come to headline at the soirée,” Dreygon said.
New trick debuts on air
During the television appearance, Dreygon and Charles previewed a new illusion involving what they called a solid, unpoppable bubble, framing it as a twist on a classic magician’s request.
“We thought, what if we could take this age-old idea and flip it on its head?” Dreygon said.
Charles described the effect as durable enough to survive audience handling.
