Deaf Pet Awareness Week is underway, serving as a time to focus on what it means to care for a pet that is deaf and to shine on a light on how these pets can lead a full and happy life.
“Deafness can be hereditary,” explained Ian Ouzts with Michigan Humane. “Certain breeds and certain colorings even can be more prone to it, like pitties that are all white.”
Ouzts also explained that deafness can be caused by ear infections, trauma, or aging.
“Some things to watch out for is maybe they’re not responding to verbal cues or their ears aren’t twitching towards sounds,” Ouzts said.
Michigan Humane has multiple pets that are looking for their forever home, including a 3-year-old mixed breed dog named Marge.
“She can be a little bit shy in new environments, but she is a very big love bug when she gets used to you,” Ouzts said.
