Grosse Pointe homeowners are opening their kitchens to the public this weekend for a self-guided tour benefiting the Junior League of Detroit.
Kitchens for a Cause features seven homes, each designed by local firms, with proceeds supporting the league’s community programs. Sherri McGrill of the Junior League of Detroit said the tour highlights homeowners’ personal style alongside the region’s design talent.
“What makes them unique is that they all reflect the personalities and the likes of the people who live there, who came up with their own vision and their own design, and then sought some very local designers to help them bring their imaginative ideas to life,” McGrill said during an appearance on Live in the D.
Firms including Maltzler, Maple and Mill, and Point Cabinets and Design worked with homeowners on the projects.
McGrill said organizers made a point of representing a range of budgets, so the tour feels accessible rather than out of reach.
“I think the difference is, is that we really tried to do designs and select homes that were across the continuum for every budget and everybody’s likes,” she said.
Proceeds from ticket sales support the Junior League of Detroit’s long-running mission of aiding women and children in the city, a mission that dates back more than a century.
“The Junior League, which has been here since 1914 right here in Detroit, has a long history of supporting women and children. That’s our legacy here in Detroit,” McGrill said.
The organization’s current signature project, Brilliant Detroit, serves families with children up to age 8 through food, clothing, literacy resources and books. The league also awards small grants to nonprofits with aligned missions and funds scholarships for local students.
“And one that I’m very proud of is that we do $10,000 scholarships every year to 10 young women across the Detroit area who are college-bound,” McGrill said.
Tickets for all seven homes cost $50 and are available on Eventbrite by searching “Kitchens for a Cause.” Buyers can also pick up tickets at a drive-through Friday (September 25) or Saturday (September 26) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grosse Pointe United Methodist Church, 211 Moross Road in Grosse Pointe Farms.
“All you have to do is drive through, roll your window down, we will give you your ticket that has the 7 homes listed on the back,” McGrill said.
Ticket holders can tour the homes in any order and split the visits across both days. Raffle prizes will also be available at the drive-through.
