Couple Charged In Shooting That Hurt Baby

Police: 10-Month-Old Baby Hurt, But Expected To Be OK

ROSEVILLE, Mich. – Two people are facing charges in connection with a drive-by shooting in Roseville that left a 10-month-old baby in critical condition.

Roseville police said the baby boy suffered a head wound after getting hit by a bullet as he slept on the couch with his mother in the home near 11 Mile Road and I-696 on Saturday night.

The baby's aunt, Terri Northington, said he was hit near his eye and has undergone surgery at Children's Hospital in Detroit.

"The baby is doing fine. We expect the baby to make a full recovery," she said.

Kevin Lee Smith, 27, a former boyfriend of the baby's mother, is charged with five felony counts, including assault with intent to muder, felony firearm and felon in possession of a firearm. Police said the two had a tumultuous relationship history and that the mother might have been the intended target in the shooting.

"Mr. Smith has been very upset with the victim's family because they were disrespecting him and he needed to teach them respect and show them what it was like to be disrespected," said Roseville Police Deputy Chief Anthony Cona. "So, apparently that was his motive behind shooting the house up."

Smith's current girlfriend, Latasha Marie Hudson, 27, is charged with two counts of assault with intent to murder.

Both suspects were arraigned Wednesday, where not-guilty pleas was entered on their behalf.

Smith was mute but Hudson told the judge she was worried about what would happen to her four children.

"I need time to get things situated for my children," she told the court.

Police said Hudson acted as the getaway driver in the shooting.
