DETROIT – The Oakland County Medical Examiner's Office said Tuesday that congestive heart failure was to blame in the death of 51-year-old Detroit Lions beat reporter Tom Kowalski.

Kowalski, also known as "Killer Kowalski," covered the team for more than 30 years through various Detroit media outlets, including the Oakland Press, MLive.com and 1130 AM WDFN.

He was found unresponsive Monday morning in his home and later pronounced dead at Huron Valley-Sinai Hospital in Commerce Township. The official ruling by the medical examiner was hypertensive and arterioscleratic cardiovascular disease from acute congestive heart failure. The office said Kowalski had underlying heart disease.

"As coach pointed it out on the field, he said, 'You know, he always tried to get it right.' Which is something you respect from a reporter," said Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford. "He will definitely be missed."
