Ex-Detroit Police Monitor Disciplined

Appeals Court Disciplined Sheryl Robinson Wood With A Public Censure

DETROIT – The ex-monitor of the Detroit Police Department, who admittedly had an affair with ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, is being disciplined.

Sheryl Robinson Wood is an attorney who was in charge of overseeing reforms in the department, which was ordered as part of a U.S. Department lawsuit.

Wood's name came up during the Kilpatrick's corruption investigation. The FBI discovered inappropriate text messages between Kilpatrick and Wood.

Later, Wood admitted to having "intimate contact" with Kilpatrick during a one-night stand.

In 2009, she resigned as the monitor and agreed to cooperate with federal authorities.

An appeals court has now disciplined Wood with a public censure, which is considered a mid-level form of punishment -- less severe than a suspension or disbarment.

The public censure will also be reported to other jurisdictions where Wood is licensed to practice law.

Wood's legal trouble is not over yet. The city of Detroit has now sued her to recover the more than $10 million she received.
