Helen Gale's other daughter, Stephanie Johnson, said her mother was well liked.

"Anybody who knew her would not have done this to her, let's put it that way," Johnson said.

Police have not released a specific cause of death for the 81-year-old, but said evidence in her home suggested she had struggled with her attacker.

"So, for anyone who knows anything, please realize that this is our mother. She was an amazing woman and human being, who was taken in the most ruthless and horrific way," Nancy Gale said. "Please, please reach out and please remember that this can happen to all of us."

Gale was retired from the Southfield Parks and Recreation Department, but still worked part-time as a coordinator of a dance program. A vigil was held Wednesday evening in her memory.
