PONTIAC, MI — Pest management officials say they’re hopeful an infestation of the invasive spotted lanternfly discovered in Oakland County has been contained. The area, which is replete with an invasive variety of sumac lanternfly prefer, the Tree of Heaven, has been sprayed with pesticide, the state says. On Aug. 10, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed that egg masses found in Pontiac this month were from spotted lanternfly, a colorful pest that threatens fruit crops. They particularly like Tree of Heaven, a type of invasive sumac that’s common along roads and parking lots. People who find a spotted lanternfly egg mass, nymph or adult, should take several photos, make note of the date, time and location of the sighting, and report it online.
