Detroit Cody High School teacher found dead in home

Dawon Joiner dies from gunshot to the head

DETROIT – Some Detroit students are mourning the death of their teacher after he was found dead in his home this week.

Dawon Joiner, an English teacher at Cody High School, was discovered shot in the head Wednesday in the bedroom of his home on Sussex. Family members said the 33-year-old's car is also missing. Police said there's no sign of forced entry to his home.

Several students Local 4 talked with said Joiner was more than a teacher, he was also their mentor.

"My teacher is gone, my friend's gone. It's sad," said student Solomon Hill. "That was wrong. They didn't have to do him like that. No matter what people say, no matter what he did, he was a good guy and that should not have happened."

Joiner leaves behind a 5-year-old son.
