The Salvation Army Detroit Harbor Light community kitchen closed its doors about nine months ago. Volunteers were able to continue providing meals for those in need at a Southfield location, but in the meantime, the kitchen was getting a complete renovation.

The state could begin distributing $81 million from a multi-state opioid settlement as early as late January after a judge dismissed a West Michigan county lawsuit that had delayed distribution. A lawsuit filed by Ottawa County government challenged the method for allocating funds to various Michigan counties. A Wayne County judge on Friday, Jan. 13 granted the state’s motion to have the legal action dismissed. She described the legal challenge as “frivolous.”Settlement funds will go the state, but also directly to more than 250 counties, townships and municipalities. Settlement funds are coming from agreements with three national pharmaceutical distributors and manufacturer Johnson & Johnson, paid out over 18 years.

WAYNE COUNTY, MI -- A Detroit area attorney is accused of embezzling millions of dollars from the late Gretchen Carhartt Valade, the granddaughter of the man who founded the Carhartt workwear company. Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel announced Wednesday, Jan. 11 that Wayne County attorney David P. Sutherland, 57, of Grosse Pointe Farms is facing four felonies. He is charged with conducting a criminal enterprise, two counts of embezzlement of $100,000 or more, and embezzlement from a vulnerable adult of $100,000 or more. He was arraigned Wednesday in Grosse Pointe Farms Municipal Court. Officials with the state Attorney General’s office said Sutherland was the personal attorney and trustee for Valade.

MACOMB COUNTY, MI – A 17-year-old has been charged with multiple felonies after he led police on a chase in stolen vehicle. The teen, who was not named, was arraigned Tuesday with carrying a concealed weapon, third degree fleeing, receiving/concealing a stolen motor vehicle, resisting/obstructing police and felony firearm, Macomb County Prosecutor Peter J. Lucido said. The incident occurred on Jan. 9 when police attempted to stop the suspect’s vehicle. The Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office requested to keep the juvenile in Macomb County and to waive jurisdiction of the juvenile to be tried as an adult. A motion to waive jurisdiction is scheduled Jan. 30. or Feb. 2.

Secure Cities Partnership troopers first reported over 40 vehicles were drag racing around 12:30 a.m. Sunday, Jan. 8, in the area of Woodward Avenue in Highland Park. Police said the suspect driver ran several red lights and shut off the vehicle’s lights. State police later located the Charger traveling at a high rate of speed in Detroit and began following it. Troopers followed the Charger as it traveled throughout Detroit and eventually westbound on I-94 toward Washtenaw County. Police successfully deployed stop sticks and the Charger came to a stop on the right shoulder of westbound I-94.

DETROIT – Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Eshaun Phillip Blanding, 23, of Detroit, in connection with the carjacking of a Dearborn man’s car. When the officers located the stolen car, it is alleged that Blanding opened fire on the undercover car. The Dearborn Police Department issued a statement earlier saying at approximately 6 a.m. (January 2), Dearborn Police responded to a report of a stolen vehicle from the city of Dearborn. As officers were conducting surveillance on the stolen vehicle, a man with a rifle approached an unmarked Dearborn Police vehicle with one officer inside.

WAYNE COUNTY, MI – A Michigan conservator has been ordered to refund more than $41,000 to a ward after she billed herself $79,000 for less than a year of work, including the ward’s entire inheritance, authorities announced. In October 2021, Dudek was appointed guardian and conservator for an individual with a yearly income of $30,000, the release said. Dudek’s accounting shows that from October 2021 to June 2022, she billed the protected person about $79,000, the release said. Within about five weeks of receiving the protected individual’s $42,000 inheritance, Dudek paid herself more than the inheritance, including charging for work she had not yet performed. Dudek billed the individual $78,962.20 in legal and fiduciary fees.

Troopers say a Taylor police officer was responding to a call and was looking for an address on the left side of the road when he struck a pedestrian that was in the roadway at 1:05 a.m. on Halloween. The officer was driving the speed limit and did not have his sirens activated at the time of the incident, police said. WAYNE COUNTY, MI – A 34-year-old Detroit man has been charged with murder in connection to the fatal shooting of a hotel clerk in Dearborn last week. Richard Lee Williams-Lewis faces several criminal charges related to the fatal Oct. 6 shooting of the 55-year-old Hampton Inn hotel clerk. Williams-Lewis is accused of killing the clerk during a seven-hour police standoff where he barricaded himself in a hotel room before eventually being arrested by Dearborn police. Upon arrival, police found a “distraught” 21-year-old employee who said there was an armed gunman in the hotel, according to the release. Williams-Lewis is accused of having fatally shot the 55-year-old employee multiple times as the man was exiting an elevator, the prosecutor said.

Our Next Energy plans to develop a “state-of-the-art” factory creating 2,112 jobs at the Crossroads Distribution Center in the Charter Township of Van Buren. The $1 billion economic development fund was first created by state leaders late last year after Michigan lost out on an $11.4 billion investment from Ford. The state economic development board Wednesday also approved $175 million in grants for a $2.3 billion battery cell facility in Big Rapids.

A 31-year-old Saline man told dispatchers a driver in a black Ford F-150 shot at his vehicle multiple times, MSP said in a Twitter post. A window was shot out on the man’s maroon Chrysler Voyager van, and police said the man sustained one gunshot wound to his back. The man told police he observed a pistol in the suspect’s hand and described the suspect as an Arab man.

Al-Thwej was arraigned on one count each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct, third-degree criminal sexual conduct and unlawful imprisonment. Worthy’s office alleges Al-Thwej raped the 24-year-old victim in his car before pulling her out of the vehicle and leaving her. WAYNE COUNTY, MI -- A driver involved with a rollover crash near Detroit Monday morning was hit and killed by another vehicle while he was walking away from the scene, police said. At about 1:20 a.m. Monday, Sept. 5, troopers from the Michigan State Police responded to a rollover crash on westbound I-94 near Harper Avenue near Detroit. An investigation indicated the man driving the vehicle fled the scene after putting children from the overturned vehicle into an unknown vehicle, police said. After further questioning witnesses, troopers determined the deceased man was the driver of the overturned vehicle, police said. The female passenger of the rollover crash has not yet been identified.
