Southgate's Allen Elementary will reopen Tuesday after being disinfected

Nearly 200 people at school sickened with stomach illness

SOUTHGATE, Mich. – The Southgate elementary school where nearly 200 people got sick last week will reopen Tuesday.

Interim superintendent of Southgate schools Nancy Nagle said Allen Elementary had been disinfected after about 180 students and staff had come down with a stomach illness.

"They start with a stomachache and it's very, very rapid onset. By the time they tell you they havea stomachache, they're throwing up," Nagle said.

She said a few students started feeling sick last Thursday but the illness quickly spread on Friday.

"Some of the parents have taken their kids to the doctor. The doctor says it's the flu," Nagle said. "I've been here 13 years, through a lot of the really serious flu things, and we've never had that many students out."
