Meijer, MSU promote Michigan small businesses with launch of Made in Michigan initiative

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. – The Meijer grocery store chain is launching a new program to support local businesses statewide. It's starting a "Made in Michigan" initiative at the end of this month. The retailer is working with the Michigan State University Product Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources to expand its offering of products made right here in Michigan. 

The store's Co-Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Hank Meijer, made the announcement Monday. He said the store chain has always been please to support Michigan businesses and is now doing more to support the state economy. 

The "Made in Michigan" program will launch the week of Jan. 29 with 49 new grocery items, including marinara sauce, blueberry butter, and gluten free baking mixes. They will be put in designated areas in 33 Meijer stores around the state.

This new initiative is expected to have an economic impact of $400,000, according to a project manager at the MSU Product Center.
