Who is 'Joe' in Grosse Pointe Park murder investigation?

Former neighbors recall temperamental man known as 'Joe'

ST. CLAIR SHORES, Mich. A man, who sources are calling Joe, told Grosse Pointe Park police he witnessed the murder of 56-year-old Jane Bashara.

But who is Joe and what is his connection to the Bashara family?

Local 4 has learned that before moving to Grosse Pointe, Joe lived in a St. Clair Shores apartment.

"He had weapons in his house and he made it aware to people that he had guns and knives in the house," said former neighbor Debra McWherter.

McWherter and another former neighbor describe Joe as temperamental. They said that on several occasions he flew off the handle and more than once police were called.

"He walked back and forth outside my door threatening he'd be back, saying he was going to kill me, that he was going to 'F' me up," said a neighbor who requested not to be named in this story.

McWherter said police were notified of Joe's temper.

"We told police he is capable of anything. I mean, he would pace around here like a caged bear," she said.

Police took Joe into custody Tuesday after he told them he was involved in Bashara's murder and that he worked for her husband, Bob Bashara. Sources say Joe claims he was paid to kill the woman. He was behind bars Tuesday night.

"I was shocked ... but not shocked," said McWherter. "Because of the pieces fit to the puzzle when he said he moved to Grosse Pointe. That woman didn't deserve that. She didn't deserve this."

Bob Bashara has been named a person of interest in his wife's death. He failed a polygraph test on Friday.

He reported his wife missing the night of Jan. 24. Her body was found Jan. 25 in her Mercedes-Benz sports utility vehicle parked in an alley near 7 Mile Road and Hoover Street in Detroit.

An autopsy showed her wind pipe had been crushed and the cause of death was strangulation.

Sources say police investigators have disputed Bob Bashara's claim that he did not see his wife the day he reported her missing.

Joe's claims are under investigation.

Defense attorney David Griem, who was called to the Bashara house Tuesday night, said Joe's statements are suspect.

"I think that anything that he has to say about himself could be greatly interesting. I think that anything that he has to say about Bob Bashara or anyone else is suspect at best," Griem said.

No charges have been brought forward in the ongoing murder investigation.
