Man accused of shoplifting, firing shot at Kmart store officers

Man gets away by jumping out of car after police chase down Interstate 94

ROSEVILLE, Mich. – The search is on for an accused shoplifter who fired a shot while fleeing a Super Kmart in Roseville before leading police on a chase and escaping on foot.

Police said the incident happened Monday evening when two loss prevention officers saw a man remove security tags from a Blu-ray player, several DVDs and other electronics and put them under his sweatshirt.

When the officers confronted the man as he tried to leave the store, the man took out a revolver and fired a shot at the ground, police said.

Some of the fragments struck the officers. The officers were not seriously hurt and were taken to a hospital for treatment.

The man ran out of the store and got into a waiting older model Chrysler Sebring that was being driven by a woman, police said.

Police chased the Chrysler down Interstate 94 until the man jumped out of the car near Harper Avenue and got away on foot.

Police dogs searched the area but didn't find the man.

"It's highly unusual for a shoplifter to have any type of weapon, let a long a handgun, and to actually fire the handgun at loss prevention officers," said Roseville Deputy Police Chief James Berlin. "It's just unheard of, it just doesn't happen, thankfully."

The driver in the case, 33-year-old Javon Nicole McCoy, was arrested.

No description found

She is charged with one count of robbery while armed, one count of fleeing and eluding police and one count of retail fraud.

Anyone with information on the case is asked to call Roseville police at 586-4474483.
