Racist letter about staff, student found at Birmingham Seaholm High School

Letter targets black staff members, student with specific last name 'Martin,' as in Trayvon Martin

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. – A teacher found the letter Monday morning in a classroom at Birmingham Seaholm High School.

The writer made racist references to three staff members and student at the school. All four are black.

They also all share the same last name as 17-year-old Trayvon Martin, the unarmed Florida teenager who was fatally shot by a neighborhood watch volunteer. The letter was clear to point this out.

"The message is this will not be accepted and we will find out who is responsible," said Marcia Wilkinson, of Birmingham Public Schools.

Police now are investigating.

This letter comes a year after racist graffiti was sprayed on the wall of one of the school's bathrooms.

That now-former student was charged with ethnic intimidation for writing the racist messages. The school has been trying to heal ever since. This racist letter has opened new wounds.

"It's just awful that someone would even consider doing that again after all the pain that everyone went through last year," said Seaholm student Jillian Walker.

Seaholm sophomore Charlie Burg is ashamed of the student body.

"Well, I am quite appalled that it would happen multiple times," Burg said. "And I am ashamed by the conduct of the students here."
