Hartland student's car hits school security guard

Drugs, distracted driving may have played role in Hartland High School crash

HARTLAND, Mich. – Doctors say it is a miracle Suzzane Hazzard is still alive after being hit by a car in the parking lot of Hartland High School.

Hazzard has been a security guard at the school for 10 years.  She was on duty Tuesday when a student's car hit her at a speed estimated at 45 miles per hour.

Livingston County Sheriff Bob Bezotte said a 16-year-old student was leaving the campus when he dropped something on the floor.  When he reached down to get it, his foot hit the gas.

"The passenger tried to grab the steering wheel to keep from hitting the victim. It flipped her up. She landed a little ways from where the impact was," Bezotte said.

Carlie Hazzard said her mother is in pain from serious injuries.

"She has a compression fracture in her upper back around the shoulder blade area. She has a huge gash on her head right now. They had to put six staples in," Hazzard said.

Investigators said they found marijuana in the student's car and the drug may have played a role in the crash.

Hartland High School students said they are praying their 52-year-old security guard has a speedy recovery.

Detectives said they are still investigating.
