Oakland County teen recovering after being knocked off bike while chasing crooks

Springfield Township 15-year-old hurt while chasing 2 men who tried to break into his home Saturday

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – Sam Tanielian is a one proud father.

His 15-year-old son, Alex, was at school Monday because he didn't want to miss exam week.

But, Alex, has a dozen stitches in his face and quite the story to tell.

The Oakland County Sheriff's office says at about 11:20 p.m. Saturday, Alex went into his family's garage for a bottle of water.

He heard someone trying to break in to the garage's side door.

Facing two men, both wearing hooded sweatshirts, the teen told police he didn't hesitate. Alex chased the burglars.

In fact, with the two men running from the house, Alex grabbed his bike and pedaled after them.

At the bottom of their Springfield Township street, Boulder Court, Alex says he was able to grab one of the crooks.

That crook pushed Alex over and the teen hit his face on the street and was knocked out cold for 20 minutes.

Sam Tanielian says when his son was able to get himself back to the family's home, "His face was covered in blood. He said, 'Mom, dad.' He almost collapsed."

At the hospital, Alex told doctors what happened and the hospital staff called police.

The sheriff's office says it's investigating.

They want anyone that may know who was lurking around the Boulder Court neighborhood to contact them.

Meantime, Alex comes from a family of eight. With both parents in bed and his five siblings asleep, they're happy that the teen didn't allow the burglars into their home.

Still, next time they want him to call 911.
